Formed in 1981, Cognex is an American manufacturer of machine vision systems, software and sensors used to identify parts, detect defects, verify product assembly and guide assembly robots. Their headquarters are in Massachusetts and it has offices in more than 20 countries.
In its formative years, the company produced its first vision system, DataMan which was the world’s first industrial optical character recognition (OCR) system capable of reading, verifying, and assuring the quality of letters, numbers, and symbols marked directly on parts and components.
Cognex quickly became the leading supplier of machine vision to semiconductor and electronics capital equipment makers who integrated Cognex vision into many types of machines used to make semiconductor chips and printed circuit boards.
Cognex retains its focus as a company of vision experts and continues to investigate new ways to improve performance of industrial machine vision systems. Its convernance which dictates a significant % of turnover is spent on R&D helps maintain its technology leader position and current have in excess of 1000 live patents on vision technology.
